After a long month of our artists and staff working hard, our first issue will launch this Friday, July 3rd. A collection of visual arts, music, and writings will be released, each focused around the theme “Sunlight and Serotonin.”
This month’s theme is meant to reflect current events and the present social climate. Serotonin is believed to help regulate mood and social behavior, appetite, sleep, memory, and function. It is best known for inspiring feelings of joy. According to the NCBI, exposure to sunlight is thought to increase the brain’s release of this hormone that is nicknamed “the happiness chemical.” However, amidst fear and uncertainty from recent events– the pandemic, racism, political uproar– it feels like it’s gotten harder to see the sun. That “happiness chemical” seems so scarce.
Our artists have used their art to show how they’ve been impacted by societal change. This month’s collection shows how teens like them have been affected by serotonin this month (or lack thereof).
