The Impact of Musical Theatre Amongst Gen Z

Our hobbies impact us immensely, and those taking interest in MT are no different.

Musical Theatre is one of the most popular forms of performance-related recreational entertainment in the United States. Many find it as a second home, whether it be through viewing or performing. From research conducted through peers and interviews, most say that “it has made [them] more outgoing and has provided a really good place to call home, as well as a group of people to consider family.” Theatre is not only a resource for relaxation, but it provides a feeling of ‘home at home’ for most performers.

Luckily for us, that’s not all! For those who prefer to watch rather than act, a great show can impact your life tremendously. One source said: “From theatre I know to go through every day living in the moment and to be kind to everyone – to just keep trying – because the comfort doesn’t always stay within the acting. You really just learn how to live life.” It shows us that we can do so much more with ourselves than just the normal, everyday routine.

Theatre can provide opportunity to grow in so many different ways. From shows about growing up as a teenager, to even meeting with the undead to wreck your dad’s evening, we can pull from our comfort characters and learn so many new ways to improve. Theatre can teach you to even “healthily work through [worries]” and immerse yourself into your passion. We can all stand to learn a lot from our favorite shows, characters, performers, and songs: happiness, sadness, confrontation, and even dealing with the undead. Musical Theatre does just that.
