What makes something aesthetic? It’s not solely a minimalistic setting that makes something satisfying to you, and it’s not only a color scheme either. So what really makes you drawn to things in a pleasing sense? Visually, to make something appealing to the eye, balance, color, movement, pattern, scale, shape, and visual weight should all be taken into account.
Firstly, what others find to be aesthetic can vary. Although melting ice cream in the sun can be aesthetic to you, someone might think it’s messy or feel stressed looking at it. What visually appeals to us exists because of our culture, age, and even our educational level. There are also setups and graphs involved. Many have presumed that backgrounds with neat spacing and orderly mannered texts are aesthetic up close, but scratchy handwriting and randomly placed boxes can also attract us from afar.
One thing for sure is that all visuals should be consistent. If one of your papers is neatly organized, the next sheet should not have a random placement. Some added principles such as the golden ratio, rule of thirds, and the Gestalt Principle (exploit universal truths on how people see and interpret things).
So whether you like to bullet journal, make mood boards (or even use the new functions of the iOS 14 update), your aesthetics can be made.
