A neon, cyberpunk citizen escapes to a glowing cave to enjoy futuristic entertainment. A person in a shabby dress uses broken equipment to divert their attention from the trash building up around them. Both of these descriptions could be attributed to this piece, but which one aligns most closely with your first take? I tried to hide the uncomfortable realities of the user’s environment with vibrant, pleasing colors, in order to recreate the feeling of obsessive escapism. While I think escapism is a great thing (I’d consider my art escapist), in the past I’ve had periods of obsession where, so engaged in entertainment, I saw past my real problems and responsibilities. The goal of this piece was to show how treacherous escapism can be.
